STICKYS LAST MOAN
04/04/2001
A wet Wednesday in March! My editor has sent me to Crouch End to review "The Magnificent Seven". I've not heard of this lot before and had no
ideaof what I was letting myself in for!
Apparently, it was the sax player's birthday and they had decided to start the show with him showing off his brass section skills. He seemed to be a little the
worse for alcoholic wear and the only reason I knew what song they were attempting was because I had managed to push my way to the front of the throbbing masses and could read what was scralled in crayon on the
set list that Iffy Voice, the principle vocalist, had put out.
They marched through the first few songs at Linford Christie pace, slowing down a bit with what I believe to be a rendition of UB40's "Food
For Thought". As they blitzed through the list they became more and more animated, culminating with most of the band dancing with the audience as they bopped their way through a song entitled "Step
On". I saw the crowd warm to this debacle, which led to them playing for well over an hour. This included a couple of guest appearances and at least two encores.
The Magnificent Seven? Well they certainly do things with high degree of energy, excitement and movement and always looked as though they were enjoying themselves. As for their musical talent, choice of
material and sound, well how the fuck would I know?
